Conservation Planning to Protect Wildlife

- What is it? UNH Cooperative Extension’s Amanda Stone and Frank Mitchell begin the track of wildlife and habitat presentations at this years’ Association of Conservation Commissions Annual Conference. This presentation will focus on introducing participants to ways that the Wildlife Action Plan can be used at the local level to strengthen community conservation planning. Find out how to incorporate the Wildlife Action Plan into your natural resources inventories, open space plans, landowner outreach, and more. Attend this workshop if you want to find out more about how you can use the Wildlife Action Plan to maximize your conservation planning resources.

Implementing a Conservation Plan Using Tools from the Wildlife Action Plan

- What is it? Fish and Game’s Lindsay Webb, Emily Brunkhurst and NH Audubon’s Carol Foss will talk about how to implement a conservation plan using resources like NH Wildlife Action Plan Chapters 4 and 5 on threats and strategies, auditing your town documents for wildlife related protection opportunities, and much more. Come to this workshop no matter what stage you are at in the conservation planning process, you will surely learn something new!

Local Ordinances to Protect Wildlife
- When? Saturday, November 1, 2008, 1:15-2:15pm
- Where? Concord, NH

- Who's it for? Conservation Commissions
- What is it? Steve Whitman from Jeffrey H. Taylor & Associates, Inc. will continue this block of wildlife protection presentations at the NH Association of Conservation Commissions Annual Conference. He will discuss how local ordinances to protect wildlife habitat are created, implemented, and enforced. Local Regulation and Policy is a strategy outlined in New Hampshire’s Wildlife Action Plan and local municipalities are encouraged to implement innovative land use incentives, legislation, and other measures that conserve habitat and landscape connections, maintain ecological function, and protect water quality and quantity.

Managing Lands for Wildlife Habitat: Grasslands and other open habitats
- When? Saturday, November 1, 2008, 2:30-3:30pm

- Who's it for? Conservation Commissions
- What is it? To round out this block at the NH Association of Conservation Commissions Annual Conference, Emily Brunkhurst from Fish and Game will discuss techniques for managing grasslands and where to apply for habitat management funding. Do you own or manage an agricultural field? Emily will discuss the current guidelines on timing and frequency of mowing and burning that promote grassland habitats and can benefit species like smooth green snake, eastern meadowlark, and wood turtle. Everyone will receive a Grassland Habitat Stewardship Series Brochure and walk away with a better appreciation for abandoned and current use hayfields, pastures, and fallow fields.
