Successful Search for Lost Hikers in White Mountains
May 16, 2008 - On Thursday, May 15, 2008 at approximately 8:30 p.m., two distressed hikers from Pennsylvania emerged early from a planned multi-day traverse of the Presidential Range in New Hampshire's White Mountains.
Fish and Game Commission May 21 Meeting Changed to Greenland Location
May 16, 2008 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Commission will hold its monthly meeting on Wednesday, May 21, at 1 p.m. at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's Great Bay Discovery Center at 89 Depot Road in Greenland, N.H.

Brake for Moose: It Could Save Your Life
May 15, 2008 - Remember to brake for moose when traveling New Hampshire roadways. There were 198 moose/vehicle collisions in New Hampshire in 2007; in the last five years the state has averaged 230 per year. May and June are high-risk months for encountering moose on the roads.
Fish and Game Seeks Conservation Officer Trainees
May 14, 2008 - The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is now accepting applications for a new register of names to be used for staffing current and future Conservation Officer Trainee vacancies. If you've thought about becoming a Conservation Officer, this is an opportunity to be considered. The closing date for filing an application is June 20, 2008.

May 12, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department's new boat access site on Lake Winnisquam in Laconia is currently scheduled to open on July 1, 2008.
Catch the King of Fish -- Brood Stock Atlantic Salmon
May 12, 2008 -- Spring is here, and it's time to fish for brood stock salmon. N.H. Fish and Game is planning to release more than 1,500 Atlantic salmon into the Pemigewasset and Merrimack Rivers -- three times the number of fish that were released last year.
Hiker Dies in Franconia Notch; Hit by Falling Rock
May 9, 2008 -- In a tragic accident, Shu Qin, age 28, a woman hiker from Shanghai, China, was killed after being hit by a boulder on the Falling Waters Trail in Franconia Notch on Thursday, May 8, 2008.
Atlantic Coast and Hampton Harbor Shellfishing Closed Because of "Red Tide"
May 8, 2008 -- To protect the public from the possible consumption of contaminated shellfish, officials from the N.H. Department of Environmental Services and N.H. Fish and Game have closed New Hampshire's Atlantic coastal waters, and the waters of Hampton/Seabrook Harbor, to the taking of all species of molluscan shellfish until further notice.

May 1, 2008 - The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Law Enforcement Division announces a new online function for Operation Game Thief, a system that offers concerned citizens and responsible sportsmen and women a way to anonymously report poachers and poaching incidents. A new Operation Game Thief web page at www.WildNH.com/OGT now allows people to report fish and wildlife crimes electronically, online, 24 hours a day.
Atlantic Herring Landing Restricted
April 30, 2008 -- N.H. Fish and Game's Marine Fisheries Division today announced that effective May 1, 2008, commercial fishermen will not be allowed to land Atlantic herring taken from Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Management Area 1A from May 1-31. The May closure will be followed by a period of restricted days through December 31.

Access Facility at Pleasant Lake, Deerfield, To Be Closed May 5 - May 9, 2008
April 28, 2008 -- The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's boat access facility at Pleasant Lake in Deerfield will be closed from May 5 through May 9, 2008, as the Department completes work on the boat ramp that could not be completed last fall.
New Hampshire Fish Consumption Guidelines Updated
April 25, 2008-- State officials responsible for monitoring New Hampshire waterways and protecting public health released updated fish consumption advice that includes several new recommendations: Stocked (hatchery-grown) trout are exempt from the statewide advisory; perch are included with other species that have length restrictions regarding consumption; and four new waterbodies have specific advisories.

Chronic Wasting Disease Not Detected in New Hampshire's Deer
April 16, 2008 -- New Hampshire's white-tailed deer population once again showed no evidence of chronic wasting disease (CWD), based on monitoring data gathered during the 2007 hunting season.
Young Grafton Artist Earns Top State Honors in Junior Duck Stamp Contest
April 14, 2008 - Carole Platka, age 18, of Grafton, has taken top honors among young New Hampshire artists in the 2008 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Contest. Platka's colored-pencil drawing of a mallard was chosen from among 159 entries as New Hampshire's State Best of Show in the Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest. New Hampshire's portion of the contest was coordinated by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
Outlook Good for New Hampshire Spring Turkey Hunt
April 14, 2008 - The outlook is good for a successful 2008 New Hampshire spring gobbler hunt, according to N.H. Fish and Game Turkey Project Leader Ted Walski. The state's spring turkey hunt runs from May 3-31. The youth turkey hunt weekend (April 26-27) precedes the regular season.

Prescribed Burn in Concord Airport Area to Improve Wildlife Habitat
April 9, 2008 -- New Hampshire Fish and Game and the N.H. Department of Resources and Economic Development Division of Forests and Lands, with support from the N.H. Army National Guard, US Fish and Wildlife Service, and City of Concord, will be conducting a "prescribed burn" in areas on and near Concord Municipal Airport grounds this spring. The prescribed burn may occur as early as Thursday, April 10, or as late as late May; the date will be finalized when the weather and atmospheric conditions are seen to be safe.

April 7, 2008 -- New Hampshire bears are waking up and heading out in search of food to replenish fat reserves depleted during the long winter denning period. Natural foods are somewhat scarce this year, so it's especially important for homeowners to take action now to reduce the chances of a bear visiting their home.

Double Snowmobile Fatality in Ossipee
April 2, 2008 -- A snowmobile accident claimed the lives of two young Ossipee residents Tuesday evening, (April 1). The victims were Raymond Eldridge, age 18, and his 8-year-old cousin, whose name is being withheld in consideration of his age.
April 5 Public Information Meeting on Clarksville Pond Management
April 1, 2008 -- The N.H. Fish and Game Department will hold a public informational meeting on April 5 at 10:30 a.m. at the Colebrook Elementary School gymnasium to discuss the results of a three-year assessment of Clarksville Pond (in Coos County).
Fish and Game Donates 550 Pounds of Meat to Littleton Food Pantry
March 31, 2008 -- N.H. Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers recently delivered approximately 550 pounds of processed moose and deer meat to the Littleton, N.H., Outreach Office of the Tri-County Community Action Program (CAP), for distribution to the needy.

Take a Kid Hunting on Youth Turkey Weekend -- April 26-27, 2008
March 28, 2008 -- New Hampshire's 2008 youth turkey hunt will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27, the weekend before spring gobbler season gets underway on May 3. During the 2007 youth weekend, young hunters took 454 turkeys, or 12.4% of the total season harvest.

Missing Virginia Hikers Rescued
February 19, 2008-- Search and rescue teams successfully located two missing hikers, Alex Obert, age 30, and Steven "Dewey" McCay, age 29, both of Arlington, Virginia, today. They are both in good condition.

February 14, 2008 -- With school winter vacation weeks about to begin and New Hampshire's mountains enjoying a very snowy winter, outdoor authorities are advising the Granite State's backcountry visitors to "hikeSafe."
Missing Hikers Found in Franconia Notch; One Dead
February 12, 2008 - Two hikers missing on Mt. Lafayette were found about 7:30 p.m. yesterday evening by a 7-man rescue team. Laurence Fredrickson, age 55, of South Suttonwas pronounced dead at the Littleton Hospital. James Osborne, age 36, of Manchester was reported to be in critical condition suffering from severe hypothermia and frostbite.

2008 Mid-winter Bald Eagle Survey Yields Record N.H. Sightings
January 28, 2008 - Eagle-eyed observers saw a record-high total of 67 bald eagles in New Hampshire during the 2008 National Mid-winter Bald Eagle Survey two-week count period in January, including 59 (30 adults, 29 immatures) observed on Survey Day. The effort was coordinated by NH Audubon in collaboration with the Fish and Game's Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program.
Weekend Snowmobile Accident at Nash Stream; ATV Arrest in Berlin
January 28, 2008 -- A Lancaster man was involved in a snowmobile accident on Little Bog Pond in the Nash Stream State Forest late Saturday night. In a separate incident the same night, a Berlin man was arrested for driving while intoxicated on an off-highway recreational vehicle.

Dover Man Convicted of Numerous Wildlife Violations
January 23, 2008 -- New Hampshire Fish and Game Department Conservation Officers have successfully concluded an investigation that focused on numerous unlawful hunting activities of Carl R. Chapman, age 63, of Old Rochester Road, Dover.
N.H. Candidates Sought for New England Fishery Management Council
January 18, 2008 -- The State of New Hampshire has been notified by the National Marine Fisheries Service of four vacancies for the New England Fishery Management Council's at-large seats, one of which is currently held by Michael Leary of New Hampshire. To assist in filling these vacancies, N.H. Fish and Game's Marine Fisheries Division will host a candidates' interview night on Monday, February 11, at 7:00 p.m., at the Urban Forestry Center in Portsmouth, N.H.
Bonus Trout Stocked for Anglers in Selected Lakes, Ponds and Rivers
January 18, 2008 -- Recent stockings of surplus brown and brook trout in spawning colors should lead to some pleasantly surprised anglers in New Hampshire. These fish, topping out at over two pounds and 18 inches, will challenge and reward the dedicated angler. List of waterbodies stocked.

Wildlife Action Grants Available for Teachers
January 10, 2008 --- A new round has opened for teachers interested in starting wildlife habitat projects to apply for start-up funds from the Homes for Wildlife Action Grant Program at the N.H. Fish and Game Department. The program provides mini-grants for projects allowing students and educators to enhance habitat for people and wildlife.

2007 New Hampshire Deer Harvest Highest in 40 Years
December 26, 2007 -- New Hampshire's estimated 2007 hunter harvest of 13,416 deer was the highest in recent years and, when verified and finalized, will likely result in the highest "official" harvest in forty years (since 1967).
Fish and Game Commission January Meeting Changes

Lisbon, N.H., Man Injured in Hunting-related Shooting Incident
November 7, 2007-- A Lisbon, N.H., man sustained a self-inflicted wound in a hunting-related shooting incident late Monday afternoon (November 5). James White, age 33, of Lisbon suffered a non-life-threatening arm injury as he was attempting to reload his muzzleloader rifle while deer hunting.

October 30, 2007 -- New Hampshire's 2007 moose season was a success, with preliminary figures showing that hunters took about 479 moose. With approximately 675 permits issued, this represents a statewide success rate of 71%.

Moose Hunt Update: Half of N.H. Moose Hunters Successful So Far
October 25, 2007 -- As of October 24, a total of 377 moose had been taken in the 2007 New Hampshire moose hunt (271 bulls and 106 cows). That means that more than half (about 56%) of hunters holding moose permits had succeeded by the mid-way point in the state's moose hunt.
N.H. Archery Deer Harvest to Date Is Highest in at Least 9 Years
October 24, 2007-- Early reports from the archery deer season indicate that there are lots of deer in the woods this fall for New Hampshire hunters. The deer harvest through October 21 was the highest in at least nine years, with most counties showing significant increases, according to Deer Project Leader Kent Gustafson.

September 28, 2007 -- Commercial fish harvesters are advised that the allowable spiny dogfish quota for the 2007/2008 fishing season (through April 30, 2008) has been reached. Therefore, the New Hampshire fishery for spiny dogfish will be closed in both state and federal waters effective October 3.
Hunters Can Help N.H. Food Bank Feed the Hungry
September 27, 2007 -- New Hampshire's hunters can help the less fortunate by sharing their fall harvest with the "Hunt for the Hungry" program. The New Hampshire Food Bank, based in Manchester, is collecting donations of whole or processed game animals for distribution to more than 350 food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and group homes statewide.

NH Fish and Game is NOT Considering Controlling Deer Numbers With Contraceptives
September 13, 2007 -- The NH Fish and Game Commission voted on September 12, 2007, to move forward with an initiative to regulate the use of drugs by any person for fertility control or growth stimulation in wildlife. The initiative is intended to prevent the use of wildlife fertility control drugs without a permit from the NH Fish and Game Department. The Department has no intent to use such drugs nor to permit their use anywhere in New Hampshire.

Early Migratory Game Bird Seasons
August 31, 2007 -- N.H. Fish and Game has announced 2007 hunting season dates and bag limits for early season migratory game birds, with few changes from last year. Of note for this fall, the opening date for New Hampshire's woodcock season has been changed to October 6.
2007-08 N.H. Waterfowl Hunting Seasons
August 31, 2007-- The N.H. Fish and Game Department has set final season dates and bag limits for the 2007-08 waterfowl hunting season. The state's waterfowl hunting season remains very similar to last year's, with a 60-day duck season and a six-bird daily limit.
Atlantic Herring Landing Restricted
August 29, 2007-- N.H. Fish and Game's Marine Fisheries Division today announced that effective September 3, commercial fishermen will not be allowed to land Atlantic herring taken from Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Management Area 1A on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Injured Hiker Rescued from Mount Jefferson
August 28, 2007 -- An injured hiker was airlifted off Mount Jefferson in New Hampshire's White Mountains this morning. Quentas Chess, age 53, of Mamaroneck, NY, had been hiking with three companions on the Jefferson Loop Trail when he was injured.
Largemouth Bass Virus Found in Lake Winnipesaukee
August 27, 2007 -- Bass sampled this summer from Lake Winnipesaukee have tested positive for largemouth bass virus (LMBV), with initial testing showing LMBV to be present in a sample of smallmouth bass.

Notice to Commercial Fishermen Regarding Haddock Size
August 10, 2007 -- No haddock smaller than 19 inches may be possessed by commercial fishermen in New Hampshire. Although the National Marine Fisheries Service has reduced the federal size limit of haddock to 18 inches for commercial vessels effective August 10, current state regulations do NOT allow for the possession of 18-inch haddock.

July 20, 2007 -- On behalf of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, a contract has been signed with M. E. Latulippe Construction, Inc., of Ashland, N.H. for construction of a new double ramp boat access facility on Lake Winnisquam in Laconia, N.H. The ramp is expected to be ready for spring 2008.

July 6, 2007 -- N.H. Fish and Game's Lake Winnipesaukee Bass Tagging Study has gotten off to a fast start, according to Gabe Gries, Fisheries Biologist and Warmwater Project Leader. Tagging at bass tournaments at Ames Farm Inn started on June 30; a tournament angler caught the first tagged largemouth bass the following day.

Atlantic Coast Shellfishing Closed Because of "Red Tide"
June 19, 2007 -- To protect the public from the possible consumption of contaminated shellfish, officials from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department have closed the Atlantic coastal waters to the taking of shellfish until further notice. This action is in response to elevated levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning or PSP, commonly known as "red tide," detected in blue mussels collected from the Isles of Shoals and from Hampton/Seabrook Harbor.
Successful Search for Elderly Woman
June 18, 2007 -- Shortly after 9 a.m. on June 16, an 80-year-old woman was located after having wandered away from her home possibly 23 hours earlier. N.H. Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division Conservation Officers coordinated search efforts.
