Souhegan River Wildlife Management Area

Acquisition History:
This area was donated to the NH Fish and Game Department in 1994
for river access and wildlife management.
Description: Most of the property is wooded
with mature upland forest. It abuts both sides of the river for
1.2 miles. One section contains a scenic gorge. The property is
adjacent to the 887-acre Russell Abbott State Forest, and the 410-acre
Heald Tract owned by the Society for Protection of New Hampshire
Forests.
Common Wildlife: The Souhegan River is
managed for trout and is stocked with brook, rainbow and brown trout.
Atlantic salmon fry are also stocked. Undeveloped shorebank angling
opportunities are available. Great blue herons can occasionally
be seen.
Special Notes: Fishing and hiking are
permitted on the Heald Tract; however, no hunting or boating is
allowed.
Unique 100-foot high granite pillars can be seen
in the gorge area, which are remnants of a former railroad bridge.
Directions: Access to the property can
be gained from Route 31 or Kimball Hill Road.
