Climate Change

Will you help us develop plans to safeguard wildlife and habitats in the face of climate change? Please join with Fish and Game's Wildlife Action Plan team and conservation partners as we work on a climate change-related revision to the plan.

Please RSVP to your choice of meetings (Feb. 14 in Greenland; Feb. 16 in Lancaster; Feb. 21 in Concord; Feb. 24 in Keene - see below for details) at http://www.doodle.com/74eigmhzpd3ides8 - or call 603-271-2462.

Over the past year, a committee has been working on an Ecosystems and Climate Adaptation Plan, which will be both an amendment to New Hampshire's Wildlife Action Plan and part of the state's Climate Action Plan. As our first step, we gathered ecosystem experts to develop climate vulnerability assessments for habitats, as most wildlife will be affected by changes to habitat.

At the meeting, we'll work on strategies to address the vulnerabilities of specific habitats and species, as well as overarching strategies that will benefit multiple habitat types or species. During each structured meeting, there will be a brief overview of the vulnerability assessments and then a discussion of the potential strategies for each group of habitats.

Invited participants include planners, biologists, on-the-ground managers, decision makers and educators.

The four meetings are as follows (please select just one):

  • February 14, 9 to noon, at the Great Bay Discovery Ctr., 89 Depot Road, Greenland. This meeting will concentrate on coastal vulnerabilities, but will also address the other habitats.
  • February 16, 9:30 to 12:30, in Lancaster NH at the Region 1 NHFG office, 629B Main St.
  • February 21, 9 to noon, in Concord at the NHFG office, 11 Hazen Drive.
  • February 24, 9 to noon, in Keene at the Region 4 NHFG office, 15 Ashbrook Court.

In preparation for this meeting, please read at least one forest and one wetland or surface water draft vulnerability assessment (see below). Please read the Climate Assumptions document to understand the latest science used in the vulnerability narratives. Please give thought to how we can help the habitat and associated species persist in the face of a changing climate. Note that the coastal habitat vulnerability assessments are still being done, but will be available by February 7.

Again, please RSVP at http://www.doodle.com/74eigmhzpd3ides8 so we'll know which meeting you will be attending, or call 603-271-2462.

You only need to attend one meeting. All meeting contributions will be merged into one guidance document. If you can't make it to a meeting, we welcome comments and suggestions via email. Please send strategies or comments on any of the draft assessments via email to emily.brunkhurst@wildlife.nh.gov.
